In my first class of the 3D workshop, we made little abstract models out of wood, everyone's was completely different from one another. We each took wood that was already cut up in long strips different sizes and cut them into 6 smaller shapes using a saw. We measured them first using a ruler and set square to make sure it was accurate and even when we cut it. I drilled a hole in the middle of some of them using the drill to attach them together with small rods of metal.
I got help from the teacher because I wasn't completely confident in using the machines and equipment on the first day but I think I got used to it near the end of the lesson. I glued some of the other pieces of wood together using super glue. You have to be very careful not to get it everywhere or on your hands because it is very strong. Before we attached the wood to the base we could paint any pieces with different coloured acrylic paints and used this thing that looks like a hairdryer but its much hotter (can't remember what its called) to dry the paint on the wood. I didn't paint all sides of the wood just some of them so it wasn't too bold.
In the end it didn't turn out exactly how I imagined it to be when it was finished and I would have added a little more shapes if I had more time. It didn't turn out too bad though. I enjoyed the class a bit but I think when I'm more used to the machines and equipment and know what I'm doing, I'll enjoy it more.
This is what mine looks like:
