I chose to research the 1940s era because I’ve always liked
everything about the 40s like their fashion, makeup style, music and movies
etc. I mainly focused on women’s fashion/hair & beauty. The topics from the
40s that I chose to include and research in my sketchbook are cartoons, movies,
music, women’s hair & beauty, makeup and fashion. I focused on fashion the
most.
The artists & designers I have chosen to look at are Walt
Disney, Claire McCardell, Bonnie Cashin and Pablo Picasso. I chose Disney
because he is the most popular animator of that time and still popular now, I
chose Claire McCardell because she designs a lot of the popular women’s dresses
in the 40s; Bonnie Cashin as she designed a lot of sports clothes in the 40s
and Picasso because he was an artist in the 40s and is very well known for his
quirky, old fashioned, abstract drawings & paintings.
The media I have used in my sketchbook is: pencil, coloured pencil,
black fine-liner, black pen, blue pen, water colour paint, acrylic paint, felt
tip pens, red pen, coloured fine-liner pens, paper (printing out pictures &
collage), coloured pencil on black paper, white coloured pencil on black paper,
pritt stick (glue), ribbon, beads, stickers, black string and laminated some
paper. I used felt tip pens for Minnie Mouse to give the cartoon style look
that Disney used in his cartoons. Acrylic paints give a bold and bright effect
e.g. on the superman drawing.
I have annotated the pages where I have been most creative
e.g. added extra pages or added things to the page like flaps, ribbon etc.
I think I handled time management pretty well, I could have
got more done if I did work every single day and spread it out more on the last
few pages but overall I think it went well. I am satisfied with my sketchbook
because I used a range of media and covered quite a few topics in the 40’s; my
information is good and drawings are detailed even when I did quick sketches. I
could have also added other topics like the war, men’s fashion and used sewing
in the fashion section if I had more time.
