On
Monday 23rd November, I went to the UCAS ‘design your future’ trip
in Manchester with my art & design college group. There were many stands
representing different universities: Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds, Creative
Arts (London), Cardiff, Portsmouth etc.… If I was to go to university, I would
most likely chose Sheffield or Huddersfield as they are closest to my home and I
want to live at home while I’m at Uni.
There
were quite a few workshops taking place that we could chose to go to: Interior
Design, Graphic Design, Fine Art, Fashion, Architecture, and Media etc. I went
to the Architecture one first as it looked interesting (and I had missed the
interior one before that which I wanted to check out – but we arrived a bit too
late) but the main one I wanted to go to was the Fine Art one.
In
the workshops, teachers did presentations on a whiteboard about the particular subject.
The
architecture one explained what architecture means and the kinds of architecture
happening in the world today.
The fine art workshop was the most relevant to
me and showed us the kinds of art they do it the courses, what it was all about
and the positive qualities etc. of doing a fine art course at University.
The
first slide showed us the possible career options you could choose from
studying fine art; these included: Freelance artist, Technician (galleries,
universities, private and commercial venues), Gallery assistant/manager,
Curator, Studio manager/coordinator, Studio assistant, Artists assistant,
Exhibition organizer, Lecturer/Teacher and Postgrad study. I am very interested
in being a Freelance artist because I like to draw portraits etc. for people
and I would very much want that to be my main profession (I have had that in
mind since I came to college). The slideshow showed us famous, very successful artists
that have different/unique styles of art to give us examples of people who
achieve in fine art and are in the industry; some of the artist’s they told us
about were: Gerhard Richter (realist), DJ Simpson (uses high pressure laminate
or birch plywood), Katharina Grosse (paint), Monika Gryzmala (uses black film
tape), Karla Black (uses plaster powder, powder paint, sugar paper, chalk &
lipstick etc.), Isa Ghenzken (Random collected objects), Christian Marclay
(uses Cyanotype), Do Ho Suh (uses Polyester & stainless steel tubes),
Gordon Matta-Clark (splitting things in half e.g. he split a house perfectly in
half…) & Maurizio Cattelan (uses adhesive tape).
They
told us why they think we should chose fine art, why it would be a good option
and what we can get out of it. They gave us examples of artists that find ‘solutions’
in their work (e.g. Goshka Macuga 2009 – The Nature Of The Beast) and artist’s
that make you question their work, create different opinions and really make people
think about the meanings behind them (eg. Guernica 1937 – and Colin Powell at
UN headquarters in 2003).
This
trip has made me consider going to university more and I think it may be a good
idea to study further in Uni. If I go to Uni, I am considering Sheffield Hallam
University as it is close to Barnsley and I would want to stay living at home
while I am in university.
