Textiles - 16/10/14

First we did mark making onto 2 different fabrics (cotton & calico) using different shapes and objects. We used random objects e.g. pens, screws, rulers, plastic forks, spools, pieces of plastic etc. to dip in the pigmenting and pressed or drew with them onto the fabric using different marks and patterns to draw some of the objects from our sheet work.

The second thing we did when we finished that, was 'batik'. We used hot melted wax to draw the objects onto a blank piece of cotton/calico using the tjantings.
When the wax dried (which only took seconds), we painted onto the fabric using brusho inks. The wax stops the ink from covering the area that its put on. When the ink was dry, we placed news print underneath and on top of the material and ironed on top of it to iron the wax off of the paper. I kept taking the paper off and putting a clean sheet on top of the fabric after every time I ironed until all the wax was removed. After that I outlined the drawings on my fabric in certain places with black gutta, and did some cross hatching for depth and detail.

The last thing we did was prepare some backgrounds on fabric with brusho inks. I only got one background done that lesson on a piece of cotton using a paintbrush.
